Europe's first 8-court sports hall in Monheim:

Timber in an XXL format, reinforced with BESISTA®

Europe's first 8-court sports hall in Monheim am Rhein sets new standards in flexibility and versatility. With eight hall segments on two levels, schools and clubs can conduct sports activities separately or combined, as well as hosting large events. A retractable grandstand with 500 seats offers spectators a perfect view of the action. The building spans two storeys and is partially sunk into the ground to reduce its imposing appearance.

To have as little impact as possible on school operations on the neighboring site and the traffic situation on the nearby Berliner Ring main road, a rapid construction method using prefabricated modules was chosen by Total Contractor NUSSLI. Construction began in February 2023 and is scheduled for completion in August 2024. With around 4,400 m² of sports space and an additional 3,000 m² for ancillary rooms, the hall offers a high level of functionality and blends harmoniously into its surroundings.

The building's dimensions are impressive: 64 m long, 45.5 m wide and 18.70 m high. A timber structure was chosen as the central element. Timber is used for the exterior walls, roof, and roof structure, which binds around 950 tons of CO2. In particular, the large spans of the roof presented a challenge that was elegantly solved with timber.

The wooden beams are 30 meters long and have a cross section of 42/52 cm. They were reinforced with BESISTA® steel tension rod systems with a diameter of 45 mm. Custom-made Peikko anchor plates were used to support and mount the 4.6-ton beams on the concrete columns. The anchor plates were designed so that the BESISTA® tension rod system could also be correctly connected at the support point.

Reinforcement with BESISTA® allowed the wooden beams to be made slender, despite their large spans, thus conserving resources. In addition, the BESISTA® tension and compression rods are made from 87% recycled scrap, and the cast rod anchors contain 35% recycled iron. If the sports hall is ever converted or dismantled, the BESISTA® components can be easily disassembled and reused in a new structure.

The BESISTA® elements and anchor plates were delivered from Peikko to specialist Schlosser Holzbau where they were pre-assembled directly onto the beams, and then delivered to the site by special transport. Once correctly attached to the construction crane, placement on the concrete columns was straightforward.
